ENGLISH Paper 2 - 1994 Literature in English (Two Hours) Answers to this Paper must be written on the paper provided separately. You will not be allowed to write during the first 15 minutes. This time is to be spent in reading the question paper. The time given at the head of this paper is the time allowed for writing the answers. Attempt five questions in all. You must attempt one question from each of the Sections A, B and C and any two other questions. The intended marks for questions or parts of questions are given in brackets [ ]. S ECTION A - DRAMA Shakespeare : Julius Caesar Question 1 Read the extract given below and answer the questions that follow: Cassius: I think it is not meet, M ark Antony, so well belov'd of Caesar, Should outlive Caesar: we shall find of him A shrewd contriver. (i) Where are the lines spoken? Who else is present on the scene? [4] (ii) Why was Cassius anxious to get rid of Antony along with Caesar? [2] (iii) Why did Brutus not agree to Antony being killed along with Caesar? [4]

(iv) Which part of Caesar did Brutus oppose? What wish does he express now? [3] (v) How, according to Brutus, should Caesar have been killed? Why? [3] (vi) Cassius, in turn, does not agree to what Brutus says. M ention the objection put forward by Cassius and state how his objection was justified later. [4] Question 2 Read the extract given below and answer the questions that follow: Brutus : You wrong'd yourself to write in such a case. In such a time as this it is not meet Cassius : That every nince offence should bear his comment. Brutus : Let me tell you, Cassius, you yourself............. (i) Where are Brutus and Cassius at this time? What complaint did Cassius make against Brutus when they met? [4] (ii) State the charge that Brutus lays against Cassius when he says "Let me tell you. . ." How did Cassius react to this charge? [4] (iii) What advice did Cassius give Brutus when he said, "In such a time as this. . .etc."? Do you think this advice was practical? Why? [4] (iv) Explain: "The name of Cassius honours this corruption And chastisement doth therefore hide his head." [2] (v) Later, why does Brutus ask Cassius to remember the Ides of M arch? What was the main reason that made Brutus enter the plot against Caesar? [2] (vi) How is the argument between Brutus and Cassius resolved? Do you think Brutus was being fair to Cassius in this argument? Give a reason to support your answer. [5]
