[5] Question 4 Read the following passage and answer the questions that followMrs Jallatt was known for hosting very exclusive parties for young people. She preferred to keep the gatherings small because, as she believed, it comes cheaper that way, since you can ask fewer people. As Rollo rode in his carriage towards her house, he tried to guess the attendance. There ll be about ten girls, he mused, and probably four boys unless the Wrotsleys bring their cousin, which Heaven forbid. That would make Jack and me against three of them. Rollo and the Wrotsley brothers had disliked each other since nursery days. They only met during holidays, and every meeting turned tragic for whichever side had fewer supporters. Rollo had counted on a loyal friend to join him and balance the numbers, but as soon as he arrived, he overheard a girl apologising for her brother s sudden absence. Moments later, he realised with growing dread that the Wrotsleys had indeed brought their cousin. One against three, Rollo sighed. It promised to be as amusing as a visit to the dentist. Still, he instructed his driver to return early and walked in with the resigned smile of someone marching towards the guillotine. After the greetings, Mrs Jallatt said, Now, you children would like to play games, I suppose? No one contradicted her. I know a good game, said the elder Wrotsley. The boys leave the room and think of a word. Then we come back, and the girls must guess it. Rollo knew the game. He might have suggested it himself if he had been in the majority. The boys went to the library and discussed their choice. When they returned, however, the Wrotsley cousin blurted out, The word is camel! Are you mad! screamed the girls. We ve got to guess the word. Go back and think of another! __________________________________________________________________________ Page 2 of 7 Rollo tried to repair the damage. Pretend it s dromedary, he whispered. But Dolores Sneep declared triumphantly, I heard them say dromedary ! I heard them! Back to the library the boys went. After rejecting several words, they finally decided on quagga . When they returned, the girls chorused, Come and sit over here, and the game resumed until supper was announced. Mrs Jallatt never served extra delicacies, believing it wise to take what one wanted while it was still there. That evening she had provided sixteen peaches for fourteen children. Unfortunately, the two Wrotsleys and their cousin slipped an extra peach each into their pockets. This left Dolores and the plump, kind Agnes Blake to share a single peach. I suppose we had better halve it, said Dolores. But Agnes, who was always guided first by appetite and then by good nature, quickly ate the peach whole, murmuring that dividing it would make the juice go to waste. After refreshments, Mrs Jallatt looked worried. The professional conjurer I hired has failed me at the last moment. Can any of you recite? Everyone panicked. Dolores was known to recite Locksley Hall at the slightest encouragement. Rollo saw the danger and quickly stepped in. I ve seen conjuring chaps take coins and cards out of people, he announced. Well, I m going to take something interesting out of some of you. Fruit, for instance. Not mice! shrieked a girl. Well, fruit, then, he said. The audience approved. Rollo walked confidently to the Wrotsley trio, plunged his hand into their pockets, and dramatically produced three peaches. The room buzzed in surprise no applause, but a satisfying silence that told Rollo his trick had succeeded. Mrs Jallatt asked hopefully, Do you know any more tricks? I might have changed the three peaches into something else, Rollo hinted, but Agnes has already eaten one. The younger Wrotsley then said proudly, I know a game. The boys think of a character in history, then come back and act him out. The girls guess. I m afraid I ll have to leave now, Rollo said quickly. Your carriage won t be here for another twenty minutes, replied Mrs Jallatt. Thinking fast, Rollo whispered to the Wrotsleys, loud enough for Agnes to hear, We ll go and finish those chocolates we left in the library. ___________________________________________________________________________ Page 3 of 7 The girls should take their turn in going out! cried Agnes and ran towards the library with three excited girls following. Their noisy search was still going on when Rollo heard the blessed sound of wheels crunching on wet gravel. Rising, he said, It s been a most enjoyable evening.
