These social reforms ,he believed, were necessary for political advancement and happiness of the people of India. 4. When and by whom was the Bengali weekly Samvad Kaumudi started? A. Raja Rammohan Roy had started a Bengali Weekly called the Samvad Kaumudi in 1821. Later he started a Persian paper called Mirat-ul-Akhbar . 5. Mention any one important effort made by Rammohan Roy in support of Freedom of Press? A. Rammohan Roy presented a petition to the Supreme Court for legal action to be taken against Press Regulations. 6. Mention any two social reforms favoured by Jyotiba Phule? A. 1. Uplifting Lower Castes: The caste structure was,to him, slavery . Phule strongly felt that all the problems of dalit(whom he called Shudras and Atishudras) could be solved if proper education was provided to them. B. 2. Gender Justice: Phule said that women were superior to men because they bore children and nursed them . Men kept their women uneducated so that they would never question their domination. Phule established in 1848 one of the first Girls schools in India. He set up an Orphanage in 1854 to provide shelter to poor widows and their children. He also founded a number of schools for girls and the lower castes,i.e, the Mahars and the Mangs. 7. When and by whom was the Satya Shodhak Samaj founded? A. Phule founded the Satya Shodhak Samaj (Society of the seekers of Truth) on 24th September 1873. 8. What did the Satya Shodhak Samaj endeavour to do? A. Satya Shodhak Samaj endeavoured to mitigate the distress and sufferings of Dalits and women. Phule pioneered the widow remarriage movement in Maharashtra and worked for the education of women. 9. By whom and when was the Arya Samaj founded? A. Arya Samaj was founded in 1875 by Swami Dayananda. 10. Who was the founder of the Ramakrishna Mission? A. The Ramakrishna mission was founded in 1896 by Swami Vivekananda. 11. Who was the founder of the Aligarh Movement? What was its main objective? A. Sir Syed Ahmad Khan was the founder of the Aligarh Movement in India. The objective of the Aligarh Movement was to instil in the Muslims a desire for Western education and culture.
