Assignment 1 Justice knows neither friendship nor enmity comment on the topic in terms of the lesson god lives in the panch Introduction Munshi Premchand (1880-1936) was a famous Indian author. He wrote many novels and short stories, Premchand participated in the Non-Cooperation Movement in 1921. He became well known for his contribution to Urdu Journals and novels. His writings reflect the social evils of arranged marriages and the abuses of British bureaucracy. Some of his great contributions to Hindi literature were Rangabhumi (1924) Gaban (1928), Karmabhumi (1931) Godan and Panch Parameshwar (1916), Premchand pioneered in adapting Indian themes to western literary styles. In this part of the project, an elaboration of the philosophy that Justice Knows Neither Friendship nor Enmity is explored through his work, God Lives in the Panch , which is the English adaption of his Hindi story, Panch Parameshwar Topic The panchayat raj system of Indian villages was introduced on the insistence of Mahatma Gandhi. He said that the villagers know their own problems well and hence it would be just for they themselves to form their own justice system. The government took certain steps and now most villages follow this system. The villagers felt that the head panch was the messenger of god who voiced god s opinions therefore took the head Panch s words seriously. In the story God Lives in the Panch .the philosophy Justice knows neither friendship nor enmity is proved through the events which take place in a village in India between two childhood friends, Jumman sheikh and Alagu Choudhry. Their friendship was tested when Jumman was taken to the panchayat to settle a dispute between his aunt and himself. Jumman s aunt had transferred a plot of land to Jumman with the promise that Jumman would take good care of her for the remainder of her short life. But once the land was transferred, the good treatment which she received before the transfer was nowhere to be seen once it was done. She was grumbled the little food which she ate by Jumman s wife and her needs, complaints and wants were not listened to by Jumman. Having had enough of this ill treatment, she demanded a monthly allowance from Jumman from the yields of the plot of land to live in another place. She was refused and hence she took the matter to the village panchayat. At the panchayat a head panch was to be appointed by one of the disputees. Jumman offered that his aunt makes the choice and he would go along with it. To his surprise his best childhood friend, Alagu Choudhry was nominated. He was elated and thought that his friend would take his side and would not cross examine him too much. And he was sure that he would win the case. But when Alagu was nominated as head panch and was expected to let Jumman win the case just because he was his friend, he felt the urge to prove them wrong and cross examined Jumman so thoroughly that Jumman was trying to remember any grudge which Alagu seemed to be satisfying then. It so happened that Alagu pronounced the verdict in favour of Jumman s aunt
