VIII English Lang. 5 Mor loved Tim's shop. The wooden shutters, which covered the shop windows at night made it quite from within. In the dim light of the lamp, it looked like some treasure cove or alchemist's den. Near the front, there was a certain amount of order. Two large counters, each in the form of a glass-topped cabinet, faced each other near to the street door. But beyond these, the long shop became gradually chaotic. Loaded and untidy shelves, from floor to ceiling, ran around the three walls, well barricaded by wooden display cases of various types, which stood often two or three 2 3 10 feet deep in front of them. Between these, and in the rest of the available space, there were small tables, some of them also topped with glass and designed for displaying ornaments. The more precious jewellery, not hidden in the safes in the back room, was laid out in the glass-topped cabinets, and ranged in fair order. Tim knew how to display his wares. He loved the stones, and displayed them according to his own system of valuation, which did not always accord with their market prices. This week, one of the cabinets was given over to a display of opals. The other cabinet was full of pearls the real one above, the cultured ones below. 20 Mor had learnt a certain amount about stones during his long friendship with Tim. This had been somewhat against his will, since for reasons which were not very clear to him, he rather disapproved of his friend's profession. b) Answer the following questions briefly in your own words : i) Explain the effect of the lamplight on the interior of the shop. But the cheaper jewellery, 25 which lay behind seemed to have got itself into an almost inextricable mess. Within the glass-topped tables, ropes of beads were tangled together into a solid mass multicoloured stuff. Bold was the customer who, pointing to some identifiable patch of colour, said, "I'll have that one." Heaped together with these were clips 30 and earnings (their fellows often irrevocably missing), brooches, bracelets, buckles, and a miscellany of other small adornments. Tim Burks was not interested in the cheap stuff. He seemed to acquire his stock more or less by accident in the course of his trade and dispose it of without thought to such determined 35 individuals as were prepared to struggle for what they wanted, often searching the shop from end to end to find the second earning or the other half of a buckle. a) Give the meanings of the following words as used in the passage. It had its origin in the early days of motoring; a traveller weary after a day's journey sought some shelter for the night in a farmer's stable and was willing to pay a small fee for the accommodation. Today the roads of America are lined with motels, and millions use them every night. Often they run on both sides of a road leading into a town. But they are also found in isolated areas far away from any settlement. There are many kinds of motels. Some of them are imitations 10 of "English villages" with thatched roofs. Some are attractive log cabins of American origin. Some are set up in the style of Spanish estates, some look like Eskimo igloos. Motels can be simple shacks with bare floors and rudimentary furnishings, or luxirious places offering accommodation of the standard of a Five Star Hotel. In 15 the Far West, where they have reached their highest development, many are located around palm-clad swimming pools and have their own restaurants. Some have facilities for doing the traveller's laundry while he sleeps, and servicing his car during the night. Most have attractive gardens with tables and chairs under trees, 20 where the motorist spends a pleasant hour before going to bed. In most States, roadside tourist camps are strictly supervised by the local authorities who ensure that high standards of cleanliness and comfort are maintained. The cabins themselves may be small : one-room affairs of four-room houses large enough 25 to put up a whole family. Some have kitchens with refrigerators and cooking pots and pans. In the West, almost all are airconditioned, so that they are fresh and cool when the temperature outside is rather high; and in the winter they are centrally heated. A great many offer television sets in every cabin. KSMS\2015-16\Half Yearly - 1\11 3 30 Like other travellers, you can select a motel which is clean and quiet, and is provided with a shower-bath, good beds and comfortable furniture. The cost may vary between $30 for a single cabin to three times as much for a more elaborate one. The great advantage in a motel is freedom of movement. One pays the money 35 on registering, drives to the door of one's own cabin, unpacks just so much luggage as is needed for the night, and leaves early in the morning, if one wants to start the journey early. There are no hotel bellboys to tip, no waiting for the bill, no problem of where to leave the car. a) Give the meaning of the following words as used in passage. Tigers attack only when they feel hungry, unlike human beings who slaughter one another without purpose or hunger.........' To the great delight of children, schools were being hurriedly closed. Children of all ages and sizes were running helter-skelter screaming joyously, 'No school, no school. Tiger, tiger!' They were shouting and laughing and even enjoyed being scared. They seemed to welcome me. I felt like joining them, and bounded away from the restaurant door and trotted along with them, at which they gleefully cried, 'The tiger is coming to eat us; let us get back to the school!' I followed them through their school gate while they ran up and shut themselves in the school hall securely. I ascended the steps of the school, saw an open door at the far end of a veranda, and walked in. It happened to be the headmaster's room, I believe, as I noticed a very dignified man jumping on his table and heaving himself up into an attic. Read carefully the passage given below and answer the questions that follow : There are many shops in Singapore where customers still bargain, or ask for a discount, although price-tags are displayed. There is nothing out of the ordinary to haggle; some shopkeepers expect you to and will be surprised if you accept their prices straightaway. We know that the prices are slightly higher in some departmental stores than those in Change Alley but we also realise that to upkeep a store like Robinsons is by no means cheap. Besides, in such places we shop in air-conditioned comfort and ease. For all these we pay a little extra. It is not always true to say that things in Change Alley cost less. I once bought a Czechoslovakian glass butter dish from Robinsons for a little under two dollars. I then proceeded to Change Alley and by sheer accident saw an identical article, of the same make, shape, design and size, in one of the shops. Out of curiosity, I enquired for its price, and was taken aback when the man demanded over four dollars for it. "How much can you offer?" he shouted after me. I offered him exactly the same price I paid for the article and his reply was shockingly rude. I opened my parcel, showed him my purchase and receipt, stared at him and walked out of his shop. Conditions are different in England. The prospective buyer excepts to find the price of an article prominently displayed, or on enquiry, to be told definitely what the price is. He assumes this is the lowest price that will be accepted, and if he thinks the price is excessive or beyond his means, he shrugs his shoulders and walks away, KSMS\2015-16\Half Yearly - 1\16 Std. He does not attempt to bargain with the shopkeeper that is, unless he is unusually brazen-faced or thick-skinned for his effort would be met by an incredulous stare, or by a cold and possibly rude reply. Even if his features showed mild annoyance or surprise, he would expect to be told that if the price was unacceptable he could try elsewhere a course offering slight chance of success. The shopkeeper rarely makes his goods himself; he is supplied by manufacturers or wholesale dealers on terms that allow little variation in price from shop to shop; and for most articles in regular demand there is a "market price" over which the shopkeeper has little control. But there are other countries, where the shopkeeper himself may be, and often is, importer or producer, wholesale dealer and retailer, all combined, and where conditions are different. There is no standard "market price" for the merchandise which he has to offer, and he cannot know how keen the demand is, how abundant the supply, or what his goods will fetch except by the offers made to him by the prospective customers. He can access the fair market value of what he has to sell only by actual experiment. Therefore he begins by demanding an exorbitant price, immensely above that for which he will eventually sell and the bargain is not concluded until he and his customer have spent much time in eloquent gestures and argument. The shopkeeper gradually reduces his original price until he and his customer arrive at a compromise agreeable to them both. The price thus agreed may or may not represent the intrinsic worth of the article sold, but it does reflect its market value in relation to the existing conditions of supply and demand. This external uncertainty as to the market value of goods in constant sale gives ample scope for the exercise of the arts of oratory. The negotiations continually going on in bazaars for the buying and selling of even the merest trifles are conducted in KSMS\2015-16\Half Yearly - 1\18 6 lengthy speeches often adorned with picturesque and vivid phrases. He established a wide system of road communications throughout his empire, planting the sides of the roads with shady banyan trees, and establishing free rest houses at frequent intervals; and it seems likely that he instituted hospitals in many districts. Std. XI English Lang. 1. It may be imagined how his subjects, seeing that he practised what he preached, were more willing to pay attention to his preaching, and that Asoka was himself aware of this is proved by a passage from his edicts : "Whatever meritorious deeds I have done, these deeds the people have copied and imitated." Little is known of the emperor's family life, though there is mention in the edicts of a wife, Kakuvaki, who is referred to as "the second queen", a son Tivara, and a grandson Dasaratha. If the traditional Cingalese story is to be believed, however, by far the most important of his relations was his brother Mahendra. To him is ascribed the peaceful conversion of the then powerful kingdom of Ceylon to the Buddhist faith. His importance in this case can hardly be overstressed, for when Buddhism grew feeble in India, it remained and has ever since remained dominant in Ceylon. Within sixty years of the death of Asoka, the Maurya dynasty had crumbled, the empire had split up, and India had re-entered a period of chaotic uncertainty. It has been alleged that this was largely due to Asoka's policy, that though he himself was great enough to carry it out, his successors were not, and that he had blunted for them the only weapon autocratic force that would have enabled them to hold the empire together. There is probably some truth in this assertion, but on the other hand the rapid fall of the empire in India has always been the rule rather than the exception. In any event it is hardly fair to blame Asoka for having successors less great than himself. Rather we should remember the extent of his achievement. Read the passage given below and answer the questions (a), (b) and (c) that follow : Asoka reigned for about forty years, the probable year of his death being in 232 BC. Apart from the Kalinga war, there were years of internal and external peace. There is no record of any attempt at civil war, no hint of trouble with neighbouring states. Indeed neither to the east nor west was there a ruler who could compare in power with the Mauryan emperor. Conditions thus favoured Asoka's great experiment, the rule of the Law of Piety. It is unlikely that it would have stood the test of the war, but in peace time, backed by the personality and power of the emperor, it took deep hold on large sections of the races of the great Indian peninsula. Asoka, as we have seen, was no mere theorist. Not only did he appoint Censors of Piety, but he took practical steps to put into practice the rules he had laid down for himself : "Work I must for 5 5 ruled over all the lands from the Hindu Kush mountains in the west to the Brahmaputra River in the east, from the foothills of the Himalayas in the north to a line drawn west from Madras in the south; and he certainly exercised some sort of control over Kashmir and Tibet.
