You have also studied the importance of maintaining a life-supporting environment in class 10. However, the environment has undergone many changes over the period of time. Population explosion in the recent times has resulted in a number of environmental problems. The population of India has crossed the figure of 1.4 billion and the world population is estimated to have touched the 6 billion mark. To meet the demands of food, housing and energy, environmental resources are being exploited at a fast pace. Over-exploitation of resources and human activities has resulted in many environmental problems, such as deforestation, destruction of wild life, air, water, land and noise pollution, diminishing fossil fuels (oil, coal and natural gas), concentration of pesticides in alarming proportions in the bodies of organisms, and depletion of ozone layer and global warming. In this lesson, you will learn about various kinds of environmental polluton, their causes effects and control.
