(b) India, a sub-continent because it is a individual landmass and not just a country. Though it has many features of a continent but not big as one, so not considered a continent. These soils are porous, friable, not retentive of moisture and poor in lime, nitrogen, phosphorus and humus. d) Leached soil is the infertile soil where the nutrients get percolated due to heavy rainfall. Laterite soil formed by leaching. e) Black soils are suitable for the cultivation of jowar. Black soils found in large areas in Maharashtra. Question 7 a) Indian agriculture depends on the Monsoon rains; Indian farmers grow wide variety of crops, both food crops and cash crops. b) Transplantation, a method in which the seeds are first sown in nurseries and after 4 to 5 weeks they are planted in other fields in small branches at regular intervals. Advantages: gives higher yield, the problem weeds reduced, facilitates harvesting with scythes and economical use of water. c) Wheat is a rabi crop, grown in Uttar Pradesh. d) Ginning is a process of separating the seeds from the raw material, in cotton. e) Dry weather is needed so that the crops are not affected by pests and diseases, helps in the ripening of crops. f) Assam gets rainfall from 150cm to 200cm and the soil condition, alluvial soil, facilitates jute cultivation. Uttar Pradesh is the largest producer of sugarcane. d) Karnataka has favourable climate for rearing silk worms. The mulberry silk is raised as a bush plantation in Karnataka and the silkworm, Bombyx mori is reared throughout the year. e) Most of the sugar mills are found in the northern parts of the country, U.P and Bihar. Question 10 a) Ship building an important industry at Vishakhapatnam because of the availability of cheap and skilled labour and nearness to sources of raw materials. b) The Bhilai Steel Plant and the Durgapur Steel Plant. c) i) From Singhbhum and Mayurbhanj. ii) Subarnarekha river. iii) The Kolkata sea port serves the region. d) Gamguwal/Kotla/Bhakra e) Baroda and Mumbai Important products of this industry are nylon and plastic.
